As the one-year anniversary of last January’s devastating back-to-back storms passed, we all breathed a sigh of relief that we haven’t been revisited with such fury this winter. We hope and pray that nature continues to be kind to us. We’re pleased to bring you another report from the Pine Point Association (PPA).
This association was created with the goal of representing the interests and concerns of residents and visitors, and to communicate in one voice when interacting with the Town of Scarborough, the State of Maine, and other entities. Membership is open to all, and information can be found on our association website: PinePointAssociation.org.
During a winter hiatus for the PPA board, we wish to introduce you to one of our founding members – Jeff Thurlow, our board historian.
Jeff was honored to be invited to help launch the association, with his primary goal of celebrating and preserving the heritage of Pine Point’s early inhabitants. Jeff aims to keep alive the memories and legacies of families like the Thurlows, Googins, Bayleys, Snows, and many others who have been part of the community for generations. Jeff grew up clamming and lobstering and has a deep understanding of the rich history of our community. As our historian, one of Jeff’s missions is to honor his late father, Bruce Thurlow, who wrote insightful essays on clamming, lobstering, and the salt marsh, available on the Scarborough Historical Society website.
Jeff’s significant other, Jen Anderson, also grew up in Pine Point. Her dad, Joey, was a beloved lobsterman and good friends with Jeff’s dad, Bruce. Jen and Jeff united later in life and, together, they form the social committee of the Pine Point Association, having hosted the association’s inaugural social gathering last summer. They look forward to organizing future events to bring neighbors together. Jeff, a surgeon, and Jen, a registered nurse, also envision developing a small, local health clinic called Pine Point Medical, offering wellness and other health programs for the community in the future.
As a founding board member, Jeff believes the greatest value of the Pine Point Association is to promote positive change, neighborly relationships, and community pride.
Soon, our local businesses and restaurants will re-open. Locals will return for their spring beach walks. Cottages will be prepared for summer residents and visitors. The Pine Point Association will make plans for community meetings, summer celebrations, holiday events, and more. See you in the spring!
