Scarborough Land Trust builds community in nature

By Scarborough Land Trust

June is a wonderful time to explore the vibrant world of woodland wildflowers. A stroll through the trails at Scarborough Land Trust’s Warren Woods, Fuller Farm, or Libby River Preserves will provide a bounty of flowers.

Among the seasonal treasures is the delicate Bunchberry (Cornus canadensis). A low growing plant just four to six inches from the forest floor, the whorled and pointed leaves can almost carpet the forest in some locations. A single flower stalk contains a cluster of small greenish flowers surrounded by four white bracts, giving the impression of a single flower. Later in the summer the flower is replaced by a small cluster of bright red berries. The flowers are visited by butterflies, bees, and other insects, and the berries are eaten by small mammals.

Nature Walks

As nature reawakens to the warmer seasons, we’d like to highlight two monthly walking opportunities for residents and visitors.

The first are our Women’s Walks, which are typically 60-90 minutes in length along the trails at one of our preserves. Women are twice as likely as men to feel uncomfortable walking alone, and those who have joined us for these walks have said they enjoy having the company of others with similar interests.

Our seasonal Bird Walks are also a great way to celebrate a shared interest in wildlife while cultivating birding skills and knowledge with the help of an experienced guide. So come make community in nature with us this spring and summer!
