Where to Next? Maine Island Getaways

Summer in Maine is magical, but by August, even our most charming secret spots can start to feel crowded – it is “Vacationland” after all. Just offshore but a world away, Peaks and Monhegan islands are a couple of my go-to summer getaways that feel refreshing and adventurous, without needing to pack a bag.

Peaks Island is just a 20-minute ferry ride from Portland and serves up an island breeze from the moment you step onto the ferry. Bring your bicycles or rent them (or a golf cart) at Brad’s Bike Rental, steps from the ferry landing. The 4-mile perimeter loop winds around the island with the ocean on one side and windblown cottages and rocky beaches on the other. Midway around, Battery Steele is the mossy remains of a World War II fort, now covered in graffiti and greenery (step carefully!). Partake in tradition and leap off the dock into Casco Bay to cool off or search for sea glass on the beach abutting the ferry dock.

For a shorter adventure that takes just a few hours, the Casco Bay Mailboat Run is one of my sneaky local favorites. This working ferry is the oldest continuously operating mailboat in the country, delivering mail and passengers to a smattering of islands around Casco Bay. Bring a lunch and spend a few hours enjoying the breeze, spotting seals, and taking in the fabulous views for just $21/adult.

Farther afield, Monhegan Island is paradise for nature and art lovers. Reachable by ferry from Port Clyde, New Harbor, or Boothbay Harbor, Monhegan is a rugged, car-free island perfect for a day trip or a longer visit. Whitehead Trail is a quick hike past the lighthouse to a fantastic view, or for a longer walk, meander through the lush Cathedral Woods to Squeaker Cove. Enjoy a beer at Monhegan Brewing Company or a sandwich and sweets at The Barnacle, then pop into one of the galleries or the Monhegan Museum of Art & History to see some of the art inspired by the island’s beauty. If you’d prefer to stay overnight, The Island Inn has a variety of room options, some with views of neighboring Manana Island, and all with easy access to the harbor and the Inn’s restaurant.
