A longtime member of local band the Time Pilots, musician Jon Goodman not only lives and works in Scarborough, but also carves out time to volunteer with local booster groups and other nonprofit associations. Jon will perform at Summerfest on August 16th with his new band, Springsteen Road.

How long have you been in Scarborough?

I moved from Portland to Scarborough in 2009 with my wife, Janel, and our kids, Eliana and Joseph.

How did you get into music?

I started playing drums in 8th grade and played in school bands and garage bands all through high school and college. I went to UMaine in Orono where I played in a rock band called Fine Line. It was a great part-time job for college. We played at UMaine events and public venues in the Orono area.

How did Springsteen Road come to be?

Springsteen Road is a new project for a band that’s been around for about 15 years, the Time Pilots. We started out as an 80’s tribute band, but we expanded our set list to everything from oldies to current hits at weddings, which is the majority of our gigs these days. Over the years, we’ve received so many requests to play Bruce Springsteen songs, so we thought it would be fun to put together this tribute show.

Is there a memorable experience you’ve had while performing?

Our drummer, Jeff Glidden, coordinates a fundraiser every year for Make-A-Wish Maine called Drumming Up Wishes, where he plays all day in a number of different bands. This year’s event was held on Cinco de Mayo at Funky Bow in Lyman. The event was open to the public and was family friendly, so many of our friends were able to listen to some great music while we helped Jeff raise money for a great cause.

What other Scarborough connections do you have?

I’m a lawyer at Troubh Heisler in Scarborough. If you’ve ever been to the Troubh Ice Arena in Portland, it’s named after one of our founding partners, Bill Troubh. My mom also lives in Scarborough, and having her close by is something that I cherish.

What volunteer work have you done in the community?

During my daughter’s high school years, Eliana was passionate about theater and chorus. We loved attending her shows and the whole family volunteered behind the scenes. My son, Joseph, who graduated this year, is more into athletics, which has also been fun. I just finished up a term as president of the SHS Football Boosters and Janel was a board member. If you bought a tee shirt or a 50-50 ticket at a Red Storm football game in the last few years, there’s a good chance you bought it from us.

I am proud to say that my law firm represents the Scarborough Police Benevolent Association, which is the union at the police department. I also work for the Maine Education Association, which has occasionally connected me with members of various unions in our schools.

How has volunteering in Scarborough enriched your life?

It is always personally rewarding to volunteer and something that I feel we all must find a way to do in one way or another, but an unexpected benefit for me has been the many friendships I have developed with other community members through working and volunteering in Scarborough.

Are there any new initiatives you’d like to be a part of in the future?

I am all for helping and supporting any initiatives that bring more live music to Scarborough, especially if it gets our kids involved. When I was in high school, it was nearly impossible to find a gig because you had to be able to play in bars and we were all underage.

What is something no one in town knows about you?

Well… a few people know this but not many. Prior to becoming a lawyer, I was a police officer in Portland and, prior to that, I worked for Scarborough PD as a Reserve Officer. During my time there, I developed great respect for the many amazing people in our police, fire, and rescue departments. I feel the same way about the people who work in our schools, and it played a huge role in our decision to move to Scarborough.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Just to introduce the rest of Springsteen Road (and Time Pilots): Chris Skidgel, Darren Whitney, Rob Babson, Jeff Glidden, and John Hoekstra. They are great musicians and great friends, and I love the time we spend together making music.  We are really looking forward to playing at Summerfest.
