One of the largest and most popular recreation programs offered through Scarborough Community Services is fall soccer. With over 700 annual participants ranging from PreK through Grade 5, the department relies on many parent volunteers to assist with coaching and weekly Saturday games. Raf has been a coach for both fall soccer and indoor soccer the last four years, and each season the requests for him as a coach continue to pour in!
Can you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Raf Henckel. I have lived in Scarborough with my wife Elizabeth, and my two daughters Camila (7) and Lilian (2) since 2019. I have been volunteering as a soccer coach for 4 years now.
What inspired you to volunteer?
My daughter Camila. I started volunteering when we signed her up for the fall program and there was an option to help out as a coach. Since soccer has always been a part of my life, it was an easy decision to sign up as a volunteer coach.
What are your primary roles and responsibilities as a volunteer?
The primary responsibilities are to make sure the kids are enjoying the activities as well as keeping the parents informed throughout the season. It is amazing to see how engaged the kids are in practice and games and the overall support from the parents making sure the kids show up on time and ready to play.
What skills or past experiences most contribute to your effectiveness as a volunteer?
I have been part of a soccer team since I was 4 years old. I try to use this experience to help the kids enjoy the sport and the overall experience of being part of a team by working together with their teammates.
Can you share one or two particularly memorable experiences you’ve had while volunteering?
We try to create a team environment where everyone is connected and engaged throughout the entire season. We come up with “Three Team Rules” at the beginning of each season … 1) Don’t use your hands, 2) Score goals, and 3) Have fun! It is rewarding to hear the kids reminding each other of these team rules throughout the season on and off the field.
How does your work as a volunteer impact the Scarborough community?
I believe in being a good role model for the kids. Soccer and other volunteer opportunities are great ways to connect with kids and parents in the community.
In what ways has volunteering enriched your life?
Volunteering has helped me connect not only with my daughter but also with other kids and parents in the community. It is amazing how you see kids grow and change from season to season.
Over the time you’ve been involved, have there been any significant changes in the program?
In the four years I have been involved with the soccer program, I have been very impressed with the organization and the overall support received from Scarborough Community Services and, in particular, from [Rec Manager] Stephen Kramer in the past couple of years.
What advice would you give to individuals considering volunteering for Community Services?
Based on my experience with Scarborough Community Services, the organizers provide full support to the volunteers. If you have experience volunteering in the past or not, you will be given all necessary tools to succeed and have a positive experience.
What is something no one in town knows about you?
I grew up in Brazil and didn’t start learning English until I was 17 years old.
Raf is right … you don’t have to be an expert to be a coach, assistant coach, or volunteer! Community Services staff will provide training, ideas, and support along the way. If you are interested in volunteering or helping out during special events, please contact Community Services at 207-730-4150 or comserv@scarboroughmaine.org.
