Another glorious summer at Pine Point! Lots of sunshine. Just enough rain. Residents and visitors enjoying the beach and beyond. We’re pleased to bring you another report from the Pine Point Association.
Pine Point Association was launched last fall with the goal of representing the interests and concerns of residents and visitors, and to communicate in one voice when interacting with the Town of Scarborough, the State of Maine, and other entities. A membership drive began at a community-wide public meeting on June 25th and has now resulted in the association growing to over 140 individual members and four business members. Membership information can be found on our association website at http://www.PinePointAssociation.org.
At the community-wide meeting in June, members were invited to serve on one or more of the association’s sub-committees. Led by a director or officer and including association members, these sub-committees have made some great progress this summer. One of the earlier meetings with Scarborough Public Safety resulted in an increase in beach patrol by resource officers and animal control, and an increase in police presence to keep the streets and neighborhoods safer.
A sub-committee for beach issues has been monitoring beach access and parking. Another sub-committee met with town officials recently on crosswalks and the aging sidewalks on East Grand Ave, resulting in scheduled crosswalk painting, sign visibility, consideration for additional crosswalks, and improved signage designating the yields at the intersection of Pine point Rd, East Grand Ave, and Jones Creek Drive. A fabulous summer party was held in July as another membership drive with entertainment by the Don Campbell Band.
Another organization, the Pine Point July 4 Parade Committee, held a wonderful event at the Pine Point Firehouse on the 4th of July holiday, with a Kid’s Fun Run, a parade, and strawberry shortcake for everyone! The Pine Point Association was pleased to collaborate with the Parade Committee to promote and operate the fun family event.
As summer winds down, the association will continue to advocate for the improvement of the community and the support of its residents. The public safety committee will meet to discuss all issues related to residential, commercial, pedestrian, and vehicle safety. A local Vulnerability Assessment meeting with town officials and others will be held on September 24 at 6pm at the Pine Point Firehouse. A group will meet with state officials to explore storm damage funding for those who were affected by last January’s storms. With the inevitability of sea level rise, residents may want to become familiar with the Town of Scarborough’s Route One/Pine Point Road Resiliency Project at: https://www.scarboroughmaine.org/stay-connected/municipal-projects/route-onepine-point-road-resiliency.
