National Banned Books Week at Scarborough Library | October 5-11, 2025

The American Library Association’s annual National Banned Books Week is October 5-11 with the theme “Censorship Is So 1984. Read for Your Rights.” Librarians empower readers to guide their own reading, and the reading of their own child.

We all know that nonfiction can teach us a lot, but so can fiction! One of the best reasons to read fiction, beyond the enjoyment of it, is that it has been shown to increase empathy. By walking a mile in a fictional pair of shoes, we experience the way another person lives and thinks.  It is important to our brain development to read about people beyond our own cultures, and to show that we all have some shared experiences. This addresses the core value held by librarians of building community through shared experiences.

On Wednesday, October 8, we’ll be showing the film The Librarians, about “the personal experiences of librarians under siege and the everyday patriots who join their ranks in defense of the books.” We hope you’ll join us. And thank you, Scarborough, for supporting the freedom to read.
