Scarborough’s First Credit Union

Town & Country Federal Credit Union goes back over 70 years.

As the first credit union available to the residents of Scarborough, Town & Country Federal Credit Union’s roots run deep, dating back to 1953. Longtime residents may recall the St. John’s Federal Credit Union, which was renamed “Town & Country” in 1986 to better reflect its growing membership.

“We are proud of our history of serving Scarborough and we have been intimately involved in the growth of the town by providing financial services that have evolved to meet the needs of both new and existing residents. As a long-time resident of Scarborough myself and having two children educated in Scarborough schools, I am very passionate about this community,” remarked David Libby, President and CEO of Town & Country Federal Credit Union, who has also served on a number of town committees and organizations through the years.

In 1995, Town & Country opened its branch next to Town Hall. In 2015, it further increased its presence with the completion of its Headquarters and Operations Center off of Foley Farm Road, behind Hannaford. Since the facility opened, it has hosted many events and organizations. It is known as one of the most innovative facilities in all of Maine.

With “town” having a prominent role in its name, it’s no wonder that Town & Country has wonderful partnerships with organizations and events throughout the “town” of Scarborough. “Our philosophy has always been that serving a community means being part of the community and we have been doing that in Scarborough for decades,” explained Libby.

Each year, Town & Country provides thousands of dollars in financial support and hundreds of volunteer hours to a variety of local organizations, including:

  • Eastern Trail Alliance
  • Hospice of Southern Maine
  • Oak Hill Players
  • Project GRACE
  • Race 2 the Point 5K
  • Scarborough Baseball Boosters
  • Scarborough Basketball Boosters

Town & Country is a lead sponsor of annual events that make Scarborough a special place to live, including:

  • Summerfest
  • Scarborough Community Chamber of Commerce Concerts in the Park
  • Scarborough Community Thanksgiving
  • Project GRACE Fuel Rally
  • And many, many more.

“Town & Country has a long history of contributing to causes in Scarborough not because we have to, but because it is part of who we are, a financial cooperative owned by the residents,” said Libby, adding, “Scarborough has seen remarkable change in the 70+ years we have been in the community, and we have been there every step of the way and look forward to being a leader in providing financial services and solutions to the people of Scarborough for years to come.”
