SHS Winter 2026 Sports Recap

Playoff upsets and state-level performances

Recap by Scarborough Athletics and Student Activities Department

As winter gives way to spring in Scarborough, our local student‑athletes have once again shown why sports matter in this community—not just for wins and losses, but for lessons in teamwork, resilience, and personal growth.

Boys Basketball

Coach Phil Conley’s squad finished with an 11–7 record and delivered one of the season’s most thrilling moments: as the 8th seed in the MPA Tournament, they upset top‑seeded Windham in the quarterfinals, a win that had the bleachers buzzing with pride. Their playoff run ended in the semifinals against Cheverus, but not without leaving a lasting impression of grit and fight.

Girls Basketball

Under Mike Giordano’s leadership, the girls battled through a 7–11 season. Seeded 9th in the MPA Tournament, they faced Gorham in the preliminary round. Though the season didn’t end with a win, Coach Giordano and his players celebrated hard‑earned growth and deeper team bonds that set a strong foundation for next year.

Unified Basketball

With 22 participants under Coach Albert McCormack, Unified Basketball continued to be a highlight of the winter season — reminding us that sport is a space where competition and community can go hand in hand.

Competition Cheer

Led by Coach Kaitlyn Laverriere, the cheer program served as a spirited backbone for winter athletics. Their season culminated in strong runner‑up finishes at both the Southern Regional and State Class A competitions, showcasing determination and an uplifting team ethos.

Wrestling

Coach Ben Watson’s combined (Scarborough/Gorham) wrestlers made a strong showing at Regionals, with four athletes finishing in the top six. At States, standout Gabe Krupnek placed 6th, while competitor Lola Vance (Gorham) earned 2nd and advanced to the New England Championships — an exciting highlight for the region.

Boys Ice Hockey

Coach Eric Wirsing’s team finished 10‑7‑1 and secured the 4th seed in the MPA Tournament, combining discipline and depth throughout a competitive schedule.

Girls Ice Hockey

Coach Rob Carrier guided nine Scarborough athletes on the combined Scarborough/Falmouth team through a tough 5‑10‑3 season, capped with a spirited playoff run. The team beat a Portland COOP squad in the MPA quarterfinals before bowing to Cheverus in the semifinals. Hope Melevsky and Alex Serbin earned SMAA All‑Conference honors for their standout play.

Swimming

Head Coach Grace Girard celebrated a successful campaign, with 18 swimmers qualifying for States. The boys squad placed 6th at Southwesterns, marked by top‑three finishes from Nolan Green in the 100m butterfly and 200 IM and Evan Kasper in the 100m breaststroke. The girls placed 5th, led by Retta Humble’s top‑three performance in the 50‑yard freestyle.

Alpine Skiing

Coach Caroline Burns’ combined (Scarborough/Gorham) team faced unusual challenges when the first day of the State Meet was canceled, compressing the competition into single runs of slalom and giant slalom. Despite this, Scarborough’s girls finished 5th among more than 20 teams. Graduating senior Lilah Ferrie finished her high school racing career with a strong slalom performance, while teammates Clara Ferrie and Lena Asali posted impressive top‑10 finishes.

Indoor Track

This was a banner season for indoor track. Coach Denise Curry’s girls captured the Class A State Championship, led by senior standout Isabella Harmon, who dominated multiple events and placed 3rd in the high jump at New Englands. Junior Vera Disitto claimed the state title in shot put, and senior Laurel Driscoll earned a New England podium in the mile. On the boys’ side, Coach Derek Veilleux’s team finished 14th at States, with the 4×800 relay team — Noel Heath, Colin Anderson, Jose Bencomo, and Damien Meissner — winning the SMAA Conference and placing 3rd at States. Atticus Merriam earned All‑New England honors with a school‑record 600m and strong showings in distance events.

Across all programs, what truly stands out is the energy these young athletes bring to their sports and to our community. From playoff upsets to state‑level performances, the winter season added another layer to Scarborough’s vibrant athletic tradition — one built on passion, perseverance, and community pride.
