Kid Review: The Bait Shed

Steamed mussels and lobster pizza on the marsh? Yes, please!

By Cam O’Toole, 11

Do you like seafood? If you do, I have the perfect place for you. Its name is the Bait Shed and it’s located on the Scarborough Marsh. I went there for lunch recently.

You eat on a pier with red umbrellas, clean picnic tables that provide lots of seating, and a view of boats on the marsh. There is music in the background but mostly you can hear waves lapping the beach. The seating is outside, so the sun is your lighting.

The cuisine is mostly seafood, but you can also get other things like burgers and sandwiches. As an appetizer, I had mussels. The portion was big, buttery, and delicious – exactly how they are supposed to be. For my main course, I split grilled cheese and pizza with my brother. The grilled cheese was gooey and grilled to perfection. It had a presentation that surprised me – it was served in a taco holder. The pizza was topped with lobster and creamy cheese. The lobster topping was a generous portion and was amazing.

The staff were very helpful and nice. They were all wearing Bait Shed shirts or sweatshirts. It made me want to get a matching one (in a smaller size). My waitress brought my seltzer so quickly that I was not even ready to order my food yet.

Kids will like the quick service and that they can watch the marsh wildlife while they wait for their food. Parents will like the fact that it serves amazingly delicious food. This restaurant is unique because it is located on a pier on top of the water.

For all these reasons, I think you should eat here as soon as you can because as soon as this review is published, good luck getting a seat for the rest of the summer.
