By Emma Righter, Scarborough Land Trust
SLT property Warren Woods Preserve has many unique features such as a pitch pine bog, wild orchids, and cranberries. It is also home to carnivorous plants called sundews. They are a part of the genus Dorsera, which includes around two hundred species of carnivorous plants. Sundews are often found in bog habitats, and they have learned to thrive in nutrient sparse environments. They do so by utilizing a sweet nectar that they excrete, attracting their prey of choice – insects. The insects become stuck to the adhesive liquid and are eventually engulfed by the sundew, which then uses digestive enzymes to break down its insect snack. The sundew’s mealtime lasts an average of fifteen minutes. If you are lucky, you might see this process with your own eyes at Warren Woods!

Volunteer Spotlight

Scarborough Land Trust welcomes Christine Labaree as our new board president. Christine grew up in Maine and returned in 2020 and was pleased to discover SLT trails in her new home of Scarborough. Impressed by the stewardship of our trails, Christine began to volunteer and was quickly inspired by SLT’s conservation mission. She joined the board in the winter of 2024 and is excited for the next chapter as board president. Welcome, Christine!
