What began as a fundraiser in 1997 for the field lighting of Clifford Kippy Mitchell Sports Complex is now an annual tradition in Scarborough known as Summerfest. Always on the third Friday in August, Scarborough is one of the few communities to celebrate summer at the end of the season, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! This event provides opportunity for the rejoining of friends, neighbors, and families so they can reminisce on all their summer adventures, enjoy each other’s company, and get excited for the new school year ahead. It also provides a great platform for local businesses, non-profits, artisans, and more to meet with community members and show off their services and skills. With free parking, free entry, free entertainment, and a fireworks show, this is the event you don’t want to miss!

Shakespeare Table Reads at Scarborough Public Library | August 8 and 22, 12-3pm

“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts.” (As You Like It, Act 2, Scene 7)

When I think about fun summer activities, I think of swimming at the beach, going on a hike, and the nerd in me cries out for Shakespeare in the Park! BUT I am not an actor. I don’t have a good memory. And I want to play a juicy part! Oh, what is an amateur thespian to do? Create my own opportunity! And thus, Shakespeare Table Reads were born!

Knowing this was a thing other people had done, I stumbled across iRead Shakespeare. It is an international endeavor to bring people together through the medium of goofing around, making rude jokes (as written by Shakespeare, so it’s classy), and bonding over our lack of inhibitions. Some groups take it very seriously, studying additional resources, planning ahead, and holding discussions, but here at the Library we mostly laugh, gasp, sing, and laugh some more as we fly by the seat of our pants with no preparation whatsoever. I think this will be a summer experience we’ll repeat. As a regular participant told me recently, “This is wicked good.” Audience members are also welcome.
