As the weather cools and the leaves change color, thoughts turn to cozy comfort foods. But don’t overlook seafood! Autumn is one of the best times to enjoy fresh fish and shellfish. You can still enjoy plenty of the ocean’s bounty while also starting to enjoy some of the heartier, more decadent flavors that are perfect for cooler weather.
For example, late summer/early fall is the peak season for many fish species, such as swordfish, tuna, and halibut. At the same time, fall favorites like lobster and crab are in high season and at their best. So let’s visit your favorite fishmonger and get busy!
As you likely know, seafood is an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. It’s also low in saturated fat and calories, making it a healthy choice for people of all ages. Doctors and nutritionists recommend eating seafood at least twice a week.
Seafood for Every Occasion
Fall is an excellent time for seafood lovers because there’s a seafood dish for every occasion. And don’t forget our local land-based harvesters. Incorporate fall vegetable harvest items and make it a locally sourced meal. Need some inspiration? Your local fishmonger can help. Here are some ideas:
Maple Mustard Salmon – You had me at “maple”! A popular dish where salmon is baked with sweet maple syrup, tangy mustard, and seasonal roasted vegetables for a quick and easy weeknight meal.
Crab-Stuffed Acorn Squash – A sweet and savory fall meal where acorn squash is stuffed with crab, apricot, and other aromatics.
Pumpkin Seafood Chowder – A rich soup pairing shrimp, scallops, and littleneck clams with a blend of pumpkin, coconut, and curry.
Lobster Mac and Cheese – A gourmet comfort food, lobster is plentiful in the fall, this classic is made with rich cheeses like Gruyère and cheddar.
Did You Know that October is National Seafood Month?
National Seafood Month is celebrated every October in the United States. The month-long observance is a great time to learn about the benefits of incorporating seafood into your diet. Not only is seafood a nutritious and delicious option that people of all ages can enjoy, it’s also a sustainable food source that can help protect our oceans and conserve valuable natural resources. Best of all, you’re supporting Maine small businesses from the harvesters to the retail shops and eateries and that’s something we can all get behind, every season of the year.
With its health benefits and delicious flavor profiles, seafood should be on your menu this autumn. So what are you waiting for? Enjoy, and eat slow.
